History of LaMarque Alumnae Chapter

The La Marque Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was chartered in La Marque, Texas, on June 8, 1961, by eleven eager young women.  The National Secretary, Soror Ann Campbell, and Executive Director, Soror Marie Barksdale, officiated.

From its inception, LMAC planned programs and projects to accomplish the goals of the sorority’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust.  During the early years, the chapter’s primary emphasis was in the areas of mental health, public and grade school library endeavors, employment readiness, and assisting community members secure job opportunities. Multicultural books were donated to local schools and the enthusiastic chapter members took great pride in presenting scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the area.

Always being recognized as premier community volunteers, La Marque Alumnae members regularly held story hour for elementary school students, provided toys at Christmas for underprivileged children, and served as the sponsors for a local brownie troop. Countless hours of volunteer service have been rendered and many programs highlighting the incredible talents of children and youth have been presented.

Assisting with educating the LaMarque area youth has always been a priority. To this end, a Financial Aid and College Planning Seminar was presented through a networking effort with the College of the Mainland and this endeavor continues at present day. Two successful Black College tours were sponsored in 2005 and 2006. The chapter sponsored several “Reality Day” programs where students learned about budgeting and planning, in real-life scenarios.  In 2009, an Education Symposium featuring Dr. Adolph Brown was held in collaboration with Galveston and Brazosport Alumnae Chapters. In December 2014, a Christmas party complete with lunch and gifts was held for local families adopted by the chapter. Scholarships are continually increasing in quantity and are awarded to young men and women.

On April 30, 2011, LMAC celebrated 50 years of faithful service, fidelity, and fortitude, with over 100 sorority members, family, and community friends in attendance.  The grand event was held in the Lighthouse Ballroom at the Holiday Inn located in Kemah, Texas.

Currently, LMAC sponsors Delta Academy, Delta GEMS, community fairs to promote healthy lifestyles for physical and mental stability, and countless poignant social action initiatives - most recently the driving force of several events to promote voting and the recent election.

Dutifully, LMAC has enhanced its community networking and partnerships with other organizations and volunteers, all within the Galveston County area. The chapter’s membership has increased steadily over the past few years. With the growing numbers, LaMarque Alumnae continually strengthens and renews its commitment to Service, Leadership, and Empowerment.

In June of 2021, our illustrious chapter celebrated 60 years of public service and we are still working for the community!
